Please email tech@signs-of-development.org if you have questions about any of our software products. Someone will reply to your email, typically within 24 hours.
On this page we will answer the most often asked questions addressed to our technical support team and sales staff and specify minimum operating equipment.

Either scroll down the page to see all questions and answers or click on one of the items below to go directly to that section:

  • By far, the most frequently asked question is "My computer starts the Signs of Development WWWorkshops fine, but I can't see any of the videos. Why?"

If you're running Windows, especially XP or 2000, you should know that those operating systems don't have the required "Plugins" to play Apple's QuickTime player. With an Internet connection, simply log onto www.apple.com/quicktime/ and click on the Movie Trailers. This will take you to a page where a "Security Warning" will pop up, asking if you'd like to install and run the "QuickTime ActiveX Plugin."

Click on the "Yes" button and the Plugin should automatically begin updating your computer so it will be able to play QuickTime videos properly.

After this process has completed, click on one of the Trailers to see that QuickTime works properly. If it does, you've solved the problem in a matter of minutes.

If this doesn't solve the problem, please email
tech@signs-of-development.org with any of the following information that you can gather:

    • Type of computer (Dell, Gateway, HP, compatible, etc.)
    • Type of MicroProcessor (Pentium II, Pentium III, etc.)
    • Operating system (Windows 98, 2000, XP, MacOS 9, etc.)
    • The results of the above test at Apple.com
Someone should return your email within 24 hours, weekdays and weekends. If you'd like someone to call you, e-mail us your phone number, the best time to call, and we'll call within 24 hours weekdays (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Central Time).
  • The next most frequently asked question is "Why do I get an error just after I insert the CD into the drive or when I click on my CD drive to open the workshop?"

The answer to this one is that Windows XP and 2000 won't properly run some of the older "Autorun" software that's been installed on some of our earlier products. The quick fix to this problem is:

    • First close the error message properly.
    • With the Signs' CD still in the computer, double click on
"My Computer" so you can view your computer's folders & files.
    • Then right click on your CD drive (normally D: or E: drive).
    • You will see a list of menu items, select "Open".
    • This will open the folder in the right pane.
    • In the right pane, double click on the file named "Start" or "Start.htm"
    • This should start Internet Explorer with the Workshop inside.
OK, if that quick fix worked, there's a shortcut you can use:
    (You'll only do this once)
    • From where you currently are (start.htm), click once on "Favorites" at the top
    • Click once on "Add to Favorites"
    • Give this shortcut a meaningful name (e.g. 1000 Fingerspelled Words - CD1)
    • Click once on "OK"
The next time that you want to view the WWWorkshop on that particular CD, follow this proceedure:
    • Start Internet Explorer first (Start, then Internet Explorer)
    • Click once on Favorites
    • Click on the link that you created
This will always return you to the page that you bookmarked previously.
If this doesn't solve the problem,
    please email
tech@signs-of-development.org with any of the following information that you can gather:
    • Type of computer (Mac, Dell, HP, compatible, etc.)
    • Type of MicroProcessor (Pentium II, Pentium III, etc.)
    • Operating system (Windows 98, 2000, XP, MacOS 9, etc.)
Someone should return your email within 24 hours, weekdays and weekends. If you'd like someone to call you, e-mail us your phone number and we'll call within 24 hours weekdays between 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Central Time.

    More Questions

Can I receive Independent Study credits through another sponsor for Signs' CD WWWorkshops?
No, because all of Signs' WWWorkshops contain post-tests and activities which must be checked to authenticate participation and are proprietary information, CEUs for our CD WWWorkshops can only be obtained through Signs of Development.

Do I need to have access to the internet to watch Signs' CDs?
No, all of our CD WWWorkshops are fully self-contained and no access to the internet is required. CDs can be watched on any computer with a CD player.

I get an error that says “Not a valid win32 application” when I load my CD.
This is a common error for Windows XP users. When the operating system changed, it did not recognize the autorun file that we had on previously burned CDs. There is a simple fix/bypass to this problem:

    • Right click on your cd drive (usually D: or E:)
    • You will see a small menu pop up on the right – scroll to “open” and click on that
    • A small browser will open, double click on the file called “start” or “begin” and the WWWorkshop will begin to play
    • Sit back and enjoy (don't skip this step, it's the most important!)
Why do I see 3 dots instead of a video?
Windows XP has not allowed the most current version of Quicktime to be installed. If you access to the internet, go to www.apple.com and download the most recent version of the free Quicktime Player. If you do not have access to the internet, let us know and we'll send it to you.

When I click on the hyperlink, it does not go anywhere, is it a bad link?
No, again – just good ole Windows XP. For some reason, although the link is valid, it will not advance. To bypass this, scroll over the link (don't click on it, just scroll over it) and write down the name of the link which appears in the lower left corner of your browser. Then, manually type in that address in your address bar at the top of your browser (or just change the last few words) and hit the Enter key on your keyboard.

How do I bookmark the page I am working on so that I can easily start to work on the workshop at a later time without having to scroll through all of the pages I have previously watched?
Just before you are ready to shut down, bookmark the page your are on by putting it in “Favorites” and call it something like Signs of Development WWWorkshop. The next time you are ready to work on the CD workshop, with the CD in the drive, go to Favorites in your browser menu and click on the bookmark you created and it will go to that exact page.
