New!: Court & Legal Interpreting Ethical Decision-Making
This group has been established to allow for study and discussion for interpreters to gain a deeper understanding of making ethical decisions in the context of court and legal settings. This group will be provided a structured way to analyze and respond to ethical situations and will discuss a variety of actual ethically challenging situations as well as their own from previous experience. This group is good for .8 CEUs (8 hours) of RID and BEI CEUs. This group is asynchronous and as such, does not require you to check in at any specific time. In order to complete this group, you'll need to complete all of the requirements within a 2 month period and not less than an 8 hour period.


NIC Interview Preparation Study Group to assist candidates in preparing for the NIC Interview portion of the certification process. Groups will be provided a structured way to analyze and respond to ethical situations and will discuss a variety of actual ethically challenging situations as well as their own from previous experience.
EIPA Preparation Study Group
(Includes a readiness assessment and 4 months of group activity on skill development activities)

This study group will focus on discrete aspects of the interpreting process with a special emphasis on Prosodic Features. This group is for those interpreters in education preparing for the EIPA or for any interpreter who would like to participate in a study group to address some of the more typical types of feedback presented in the Diagnostic Reports from the EIPA. Guest expert consultants will present such as Eileen Forestal and will be included in this study group with Video Presentations viewable from any internet connection asynchronously (you do not have to sign on and participate at any specific time, it is always at your convenience).

Educational Objectives:
At the completion of this study course, participants will:

  1. Be able to articulate the meaning of Prosody and prosodic features in ASL and English
  2. Demonstrate the ability to convey messages that evidence knowledge of prosody
  3. Be able to self-assess to identify patterns in the work that represent skill gaps
  4. Construct a skill activity to address the prioritized pattern.

Court & Legal Interpreting Knowledge Study Group Part I Procedures (2.4 CEUs or 24 hours) - $250 and cost includes 2.4 CEUs or certificate(s) of completion. Please note: These two study groups require a minimum of 4 hours of work per week.

This study group is developed to prepare participants for the SC:L written examination and the knowledge aspects of courtroom interpreting. Sixteen weekly units requiring 3 hours of work weekly covering:

  • 8 clock hours on civil law process
  • 4 clock hours on legal terminology, and
  • 4 clock hours on ethical practices for court interpreters.
Educational Objectives:

  • Understand the basic concepts behind our system of justice in the US
  • Be able to articulate various processes related to:
    • Criminal Court Proceedings
    • Civil Court Proceedings
    • Juvenile Court Proceedings
    • Law Enforcement Processes
  • Be able to understand and utilize at least 80 commonly used legal terms
  • Understand the various roles and ethical responsibilities of interpreters working in legal/court settings
Certificates of completion will be provided delineating each of the above Texas Court Certificate requirements. To earn CEUs or certificate of completion for any group work, members must comply with posting requirements the entire time, no partial credit allowed, and no refunds for registration or CEU costs.
