Performance -
(EIPA & NIC - Includes a readiness assessment and 4 months of group activity on skill development activities)
Description:
This study group will focus on discrete aspects of the interpreting process with a special emphasis on Prosodic Features. This group is for those interpreters in education preparing for the EIPA or for any interpreter who would like to participate in a study group to address some of the more typical types of feedback presented in the Diagnostic Reports from the EIPA. Guest expert consultants will present such as Eileen Forestal and will be included in this study group with Video Presentations viewable from any internet connection asynchronously (you do not have to sign on and participate at any specific time, it is always at your convenience.)
Educational Objectives:
At the completion of this study course, participants will:
- Be able to articulate the meaning of Prosody and prosodic features in ASL and English
- Demonstrate the ability to convey messages that evidence knowledge of prosody
- Be able to self-assess to identify patterns in the work that represent skill gaps
- Construct a skill activity to address the prioritized pattern.
One skill - $150 + $60 for 2.4 CEUs or certificate of completion.
Any Two skills - $275 + $100 for 4.8 CEUs or certificates of completion.
All Three skills - $400 + $150 for 7.2 CEUs or certificates of completion.
Written Test Study Group - CDI, NIC, & State Certification $150 + $60 for 2.4 CEUs or certificate(s) of completion (if needed). This group provides a comprehensive overview of the knowledge required of interpreters and prepares interpreters for written tests of knowledge on interpreting. Deaf interpreters participating can earn the credit required to apply for the CDI written test - 8 hours of DI training and 8 hours of ethical training.
Description:
This workshop is developed to prepare participants for the NIC generalist and CDI written tests of knowledge.
Educational Objectives:
At the completion of this study course, participants will:
- Understand basic concepts related to culture, language, interpreting issues, teaming, business practices, and ethical decision-making
- Be able to articulate various cognitive interpreting processes
- Be able to understand and utilize commonly used interpreting terms
- Understand the various roles and ethical responsibilities of interpreters
NIC Generalist & CDI group does qualify Deaf people for their 16 hours of required credit to sit for the CDI written test - the written test study group provides 8 hours of ethical training and 8 hours of deaf interpreter role & function training. In order to obtain the certificates of completion to submit to RID, you must successfully complete the entire course and the $60 for the continuing education certificates.
EIPA Written Test Study Group - $150 + $60 for 2.4 CEUs or certificate(s) of completion (if needed).
Description:
This Study Group will assist educational interpreters to prepare for the EIPA Written Test. The discussions will encompass a comprehensive overview of the information that is critical to the success of interpreters working in education including:

Educational Objectives:
At the completion of this study course, participants will:
- Be able to articulate the basic foundation of education with specific emphasis on the issues related to the education of Deaf and hard of hearing children
- Demonstrate an understanding of basic childhood development (cognitive and language) and link the importance of these topics to the work provided by an interpreter in education.
- Have a strong working knowledge of issues central to Deaf and hard of hearing children in the school systems including deafness, Deaf culture, linguistics, etc.
- Be able to identify and articulate the decisions interpreters in education must make as well as the roles and responsibilities, interpreting modalities, and the unique nature of the role of the interpreter on the educational team.
- Be able to articulate a systematic process for approaching and resolving ethical dilemmas.
NIC Interview Preparation Study Group - $150 + $60 for 2.4 CEUs or certificate of completion.
Description
A study group to assist candidates in preparing for the NIC Interview portion of the certification process. Groups will be provided a structured way to analyze and respond to ethical situations and will discuss 50+ ethical actual situations as well as their own from previous experience.
Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this study group, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the basic components of an ethical decision
- Identify and prioritize stakeholders
- Determine the best approach to an ethical dilemma and the impacts to all of the stakeholders as well as defining why that is the best approach among all others
- Develop an intuitive sense and response to new ethical dilemmas posed in a time frame of < 5 minutes.
CEUs for the NIC Interview Preparation Study Group will be available upon successful completion in the area of ethics. Candidates for the CDI certificate will be able to earn 8 hours of ethical training with successful completion of this study group. This study group will also benefit students of interpreting and any interpreter wishing to understand about or have more practice with the ethical decision-making process.
NIC Performance Test Study Group (Includes a readiness assessment and 4 months of group activity on skill development activities).
Description:
This Study Group is developed to prepare participants performance tests and skill development.
Educational Objectives:
At the completion of this study course, participants will:
- Understand the process to develop a portfolio:
- Be able to self assess language and interpreting segments
- Be able to identify 3 effective skill patterns and 3 challenging patterns
- Be able to prioritize skill challenges
- Develop skill activities and work through them to close skill gaps (challenges)
One skill (interpreting or transliterating) - $150 + $60 for 2.0 CEUs or certificate of completion.
Two skills (interpreting AND transliterating) - $200 + $100 for 4.0 CEU or certificate of completions.
Court & Legal Interpreting Knowledge Study Group Part I Procedures (2.4 CEUs or 24 hours)
- $250 and cost includes 2.4 CEUs or certificate(s) of completion. Please note: These two study groups require a minimum of 4 hours of work per week.
Description:
This study group is developed to prepare participants for the SC:L written examination and the knowledge aspects of courtroom interpreting. Sixteen weekly units requiring 3 hours of work weekly covering:

- Be able to articulate various processes related to:
- Criminal Court Proceedings
- Civil Court Proceedings
- Juvenile Court Proceedings
- Law Enforcement Processes
- Be able to understand and utilize at least 80 commonly used legal terms
- Understand the various roles and ethical responsibilities of interpreters working in legal/court settings
Certificates of completion will be provided delineating each of the above Texas Court Certificate requirements. To earn CEUs or certificate of completion for any group work, members must comply with posting requirements the entire time, no partial credit allowed, and no refunds for registration or CEU costs.
Court & Legal Interpreting Knowledge Study Group Part II Procedures (2.4 CEUs or 24 hours)
- $250 and cost includes 2.4 CEUs or certificate(s) of completion. Please note: These two study groups require a minimum of 4 hours of work per week.
Description:
