RID, Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf

Signs of Development is aggressively pursuing projects to expand both pre- and in-service professional development needs. To that end, We are working on four projects currently that we hope will be valuable to a variety of the market. Check back frequently and make sure you recieve our monthly updates for information as they are completed:

ASL/English Interpretation Training Materials Series #2
The first in the series was so popular, we are developing the 2nd with even more spoken English and ASL stories. These are great for mentors working with interpreters and needing new materials as well as educators working with students. For interpreters working on their own professional development, these videos will provide an opportunity for intense and some very challenging practice on very diverse texts.

Learning ASL
Learn basic ASL with other students in 10 individual classes by a Deaf instructor. Be a part of the class and experience their successes and challenges in the safety of your own home! There are lessons and activities provided for each of the 10 classes utilizing a teaching methodology based upon gesture, to inconicity, to sign building upon existing skills to build confidence!

Teaching ASL
Based upon the materials in Learning ASL, educators are provided with guidance, lessons, and activities to enhance existing teaching practices. This is a must-have and first-ever ASL teaching DVD and good for ASLTA credit!

Fingerspelling Challenge Game
Want to practice fingerspelling in a fun and challenging way? We have compiled over 25,000 terms used in education to be viewed at one of five speeds: beginning, intermediate, advanced, master, and native. Participants earn points according to the speed at which they choose to watch the word and the number of attempts to input the correct word. There is a context clue if you need a hint also! This is GREAT for fingerspelling students on up to experienced interpreters.

Standardized Vocabulary for Education
The first-of-its kind resource dictionary of over 25,000 signed terms established especially for educational purposes will be searchable by subject, grade level, alphabetically, term, and by subject AND grade level. Our goal is to provide a resource for educators, interpreters, students, and parents to standardize the sign vocabulary used in instruction across the state, region, and country. This benefits numerous stakeholders:

  • Administration who are challenged to increase test scores on standardized entrance and exit exams.
  • Educators who Interpreters
  • Students
  • Parents
If you are interested in having your state mount the Standardized Vocabulary Dictionary on its State Board of Education, District, School, or other website, please pass along this URL and have them contact us.
