Signs of Development
Frequently Asked Questions
RID, Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
  • By far, the most frequently asked question is "My computer starts the Signs of Development WWWorkshops fine, but I can't see any of the videos. Why?"

If you're running Windows, especially XP or 2000, you should know that those operating systems don't have the required "Plugins" to play Apple's QuickTime player. With an Internet connection, simply log onto www.apple.com/quicktime/ and click on the Movie Trailers. This will take you to a page where a "Security Warning" will pop up, asking if you'd like to install and run the "QuickTime ActiveX Plugin."

Click on the "Yes" button and the Plugin should automatically begin updating your computer so it will be able to play QuickTime videos properly.

After this process has completed, click on one of the Trailers to see that QuickTime works properly. If it does, you've solved the problem in a matter of minutes.

If this doesn't solve the problem, please email
tech@signs-of-development.org with any of the following information that you can gather:

    • Type of computer (Dell, Gateway, HP, compatible, etc.)
    • Type of MicroProcessor (Pentium II, Pentium III, etc.)
    • Operating system (Windows 98, 2000, XP, MacOS 9, etc.)
    • The results of the above test at Apple.com
Someone should return your email within 24 hours, weekdays and weekends. If you'd like someone to call you, e-mail us your phone number, the best time to call, and we'll call within 24 hours weekdays (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Central Time).
  • The next most frequently asked question is "Why do I get an error just after I insert the CD into the drive or when I click on my CD drive to open the workshop?"

The answer to this one is that Windows XP and 2000 won't properly run some of the older "Autorun" software that's been installed on some of our earlier products. The quick fix to this problem is:

    • First close the error message properly.
    • With the Signs' CD still in the computer, double click on
"My Computer" so you can view your computer's folders & files.
    • Then right click on your CD drive (normally D: or E: drive).
    • You will see a list of menu items, select "Open".
    • This will open the folder in the right pane.
    • In the right pane, double click on the file named "Start" or "Start.htm"
    • This should start Internet Explorer with the Workshop inside.
OK, if that quick fix worked, there's a shortcut you can use:
    (You'll only do this once)
    • From where you currently are (start.htm), click once on "Favorites" at the top
    • Click once on "Add to Favorites"
    • Give this shortcut a meaningful name (e.g. 1000 Fingerspelled Words - CD1)
    • Click once on "OK"
The next time that you want to view the WWWorkshop on that particular CD, follow this proceedure:
    • Start Internet Explorer first (Start, then Internet Explorer)
    • Click once on Favorites
    • Click on the link that you created
This will always return you to the page that you bookmarked previously.
